Scottsdale Falls Short Against #1 NW Miss.

In their first trip to the national tournament since 2011, the No. 8 Scottsdale women's soccer team put up quite the battle in a 2-1 loss to No. 1 seed Northwest Mississippi today at the NJCAA Division II Soccer Championships in Huntsville, Ala.

The loss drops SCC to 12-4-1 overall this season, while NW improved to 19-0.

After a scoreless opening half the Rangers got on the board in the 64th minute with a perfectly placed ball in the top corner of the goal by Penny Warner. NW went up 2-0 in the 77th minute when Emma Jensen placed the ball in the top shelf.

The Artichokes did not go away, taking the ensuing restart by placing a long ball down the field where Elizabeth Wheeler would collect the ball and place a perfect pass to Shayla Hunt in the 18-yard box, who turned and fired the ball into the net. That goal in the 77th minute was the 12th of the season for Hunt and also the 8th assist of the season for Wheeler.

Scottsdale created chances in the final moments but were unable to find the equalizer.

The Rangers had 16 total shots today, eight on target. Scottsdale had three shots and all on goal.

Kaydence Manning was busy in net and recorded five saves for SCC.

Scottsdale will wrap up Pool play tomorrow when they face No. 12 seed St. Charles (MO). That match will be at 10 a.m. CST at John Hunt Park. SCC will need a win tomorrow and then for St. Charles to beat NW Mississippi on Tuesday to have a chance to advance to the semifinals.
