Scottsdale Falls in Region I Championship
The Scottsdale volleyball team fell in five sets tonight to Mesa in the NJCAA Region I Division II Championship at Glendale Community College.
The Artichokes opened the early advantage with a 25-23 first set win. The Thunderbirds rebounded with a 25-20 win in the second set. Scottsdale regained the lead with a dominate 25-14 win in the third. Mesa sent it to a fifth set by virtue of their 25-20 win in the fourth.
The fifth set was full of drama and excitement. The two were even at 4-4, but MCC was ruled to have made an illegal substitution at the start of the set. That ruling gave SCC a 5-0 advantage. The Thunderbirds clawed back and tied it at 10-10. Scottsdale would later repel two MCC match points, before eventually falling 17-15.
Scottsdale needed to win twice tonight to capture the Region I title. The Artichokes played without Region I Player of the Year Taryn Davis.
The loss dropped the SCC overall record to 19-6.
Scottsdale's NJCAA National Championships fate will now rest in the hands of the NJCAA selection committee. That decision will be made at the conclusion of NJCAA Region/District play which is set to wrap up this weekend.
