In dramatic fashion, the second seeded Scottsdale volleyball team won their NJCAA Region I Division II opening match, 3-2 over No. 3 seed Pima at Glendale Community College.

The Artichokes trailed 9-5 in the fifth and deciding set but fought back to win the set 15-13. This after the Artichokes saw their 2-0 set lead slip away.

SCC staved off a set point in the opening set to win it 27-25. The second set was won by a comfortable 25-19 margin. Pima, who had beaten SCC twice in the regular season, would not go quietly taking the third set 25-19 and then winning set four 25-20. That set up the thrilling fifth set in a match that went just shy of 2 ½ hours.

Next up for the Artichokes is matchup with No. 4 seed Mesa. The Thunderbirds won their first match tonight 3-2 over top seed Glendale. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at GCC. Glendale and Pima will open the day with an elimination match at 11 a.m.
