Moran helps Lady Matadors earn road split at Scottsdale

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Softball (9-19, 8-8) bounced back after losing game one 12-0 to take game two 7-2, splitting a doubleheader with the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes (8-12, 8-12) in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday afternoon.

Kimberly Valenzuela picked up two of the Lady Matadors' six hits in a 12-0 loss in game one, finishing the game 2-for-2.

Scottsdale scored seven of their 12 runs in the third inning to pull away from the Lady Matadors to win the game in five innings.

Tinley Schmidgall finished with the only extra-base hit for the Lady Matadors, smacking a double in the loss.

Desiree Moran collected five hits, including three doubles, going 5-for-5 with an RBI to help the Lady Matadors earn a series split with the Fighting Artichokes, winning game two 7-2.

The Lady Matadors scored the first four runs of the ballgame, taking a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. After Scottsdale trimmed the Lady Matadors' lead to 4-1, Arizona Western added three more runs in the seventh.

Emily Gamboa went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in the win while both Natalie Gonzalez and Jasmine Molina doubled.

The Lady Matadors are back at home on Saturday, March 18, hosting Central Arizona in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Charlie Dine Softball Field
