Arizona Western Softball bounces back to split doubleheader with Scottsdale

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (24-14, 16-6) returned home and split a doubleheader with Scottsdale (16-16, 12-12) on Tuesday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, losing game one 7-1 before winning game two 15-2 in five innings.

Valerie Joaquin singled while Jessie Garcia doubled in the Lady Matadors' 7-1 loss in the opener of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Scottsdale opened the scoring in the first inning, grabbing a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead before the Lady Matadors cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first inning. Valerie Joaquin started the bottom of the inning with a single and then came home to score on an error, trimming the Scottsdale lead to 2-1.

Scottsdale added four more runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth as the Lady Matadors were held to just two hits in a 7-1 game-one loss.

 Kaity McLaughlin went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in while Giselle Peralta homered and doubled in a 15-2 game-two win.

The Lady Matadors batted 11 times in the first inning in game two, scoring eight runs to open an 8-0 lead. McLaughlin drove in the first run of the game with a single before Jessie Garcia made it 2-0 with an RBI single of her own. Madison Morgan drove in two runs with a single before another run came across on an error. Giselle Peralta smashed a two-run homer and McLaughlin drove in her second run of the inning to cap off the eight-run frame.

After the Fighting Artichokes scored two runs in the second, the Lady Matadors answered with two more runs in the third inning, scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an error.

Arizona Western batted nine times in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, two of which came home to score on a Jessie Garcia double.

Lady Matadors starting pitcher Lili Vigil German threw a complete game, allowing just two runs in five innings of work.

The Lady Matadors are back in action at home on Saturday, April 13, hosting Phoenix College in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
