Balmes, Johnson Combine to Give SCC Split vs. Gateway

The Scottsdale Community College baseball team split a weekend series with Gateway this past week. Gateway took the opener at SCC on Friday, with the Artichokes winning the Saturday matchup at Gateway.

Scottsdale looked to be in control in game one, leading 5-1 after seven innings. The Geckos would plate two in the eighth and six in the ninth to win 9-6. The Artichokes had 10 hits in the contest, three of which came from Elijah Eynon. The three hits matched his season-best hit total. Tyler Child started and threw 7.1 innings. He allowed one unearned run on six hits. He fanned seven. Wyatt Haught (2-3) took the loss.

After seven scoreless innings, SCC plated two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to win game two 4-1. Austin Balmes (3-3) tossed 7.0 scoreless for the win. He allowed six hits and struck out three. Jase Johnson recorded his fourth save of the year. SCC once again collected 10 hits, with Hank Smith getting three of them.

SCC now stands at 20-21 overall and 11-17 in the conference. Scottsdale remains in a tie for third in the ACCAC, but the standings are still bunched up as the season enters its final three weeks.

The Artichokes will host Ottawa JV tomorrow at 3 p.m.
