Women's Hoops Battles in Loss to Arizona Western

The Scottsdale Community College Women's Basketball team battled until the final whistle today in Yuma, falling 51-44 to ACCAC Division I leaders Arizona Western.

Despite getting off to a slow start which saw them trailing 10-2 after one quarter, the Artichokes began to find their way into the game, cutting the lead to five at one point before trailing 23-13 at the break. SCC trailed by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, but used its tenacious defense to get within six at 50-44 with 2:45 left in the contest. Scottsdale held the Matadors to just 3 points over the games final 5:30.

The Artichokes were led by Ashten Martinez, who scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Danay Williams added 9 off the bench.

Scottsdale dropped to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The Artichokes return home Jan. 10, when they face Glendale Community College for the first of three meetings this year. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
