Artichokes Fall Just Short in National Title Match

For the second consecutive season, the Scottsdale Community College Volleyball program fell just short in the NJCAA Division II National Volleyball Championships title match, losing in five sets to No. 1 Cowley County in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Cowley (41-0) opened the match in dominate fashion, taking the opening set 25-9. Down 15-10 in the second set, the Artichokes found an answer for the Tigers, rallying to win the set 25-23. Cowley rebounded in the third to win 25-18. With their backs to the wall, SCC came out quickly and thoroughly controlled the fourth set winning 25-18.

The stage was then set. No. 1 vs. No. 2. Both undefeated and a fifth set to decide it all. Cowley looked to have their hands on the trophy, going up 9-4. The Artichokes as they have done all year, battled back to cut the deficit to 1 at 11-10. The Tigers would eventually push their lead to 14-12 and have two match and championship points. Scottsdale denied Cowley on both attempts and did so again when down 14-15. SCC turned the tables on the Tigers and led 16-15 with their own championship point on their serve. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to secure the next three points and the title.

The season for SCC comes to a close with a 27-1 record.

Reese Holtorf and Macee Lesueur both were named to the NJCAA Volleyball Championships Division II All-Tournament Team.
